When Babu Kishan met Quincy Jones!

10/17/2018

Babu Kishan is the first young person from India to associate with all the American and British Musicians. He was best friends with George Harrison and all too, he met the Rolling Stones when he was only 9 years old in the UK and he remained good friend with many through the decades.

Babu Kishan was only in his early 20's 1984/1985 and he was well entrenched in Western Music, he had a very good friend named Al Aronowitz in New York, USA. Al Aronowitz was the creator and God father of Rock Journalism, he was later called the Black Listed Journalist. Al was a good friend of the Beat poet Allen Ginsberg, Bob Dylan and he knew everyone in the music scene. Aronowitz was the USA PR person for the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and he introduced Bob Dylan to the Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

Somehow, the unlikely 2 met and the much older Al Aronowitz came to love Babu like a son, even introduced Babu to his own children. Over the decades he introduced Babu Kishan to many people and one of those was Quincy Jones.

Babu Kishan has always been a 'Master Collector', he has a huge record album, stamp, coin, instrument, book, manuscripts, videos of the world, pictures and a 'sun glass collection' he collected camera's both movie and still camera's and he left at his Calcutta Dhakuria home. It better still all be there because it is still his home and he never authorized anybody to touch his 'life work' of collecting or his extensive collections.

Babu was born to collect and preserve music, categorize the music of India, he has worked for the biggest record companies in Bombay doing just that categorizing the Folk Music of India as he is an expert and Babu was born to preserve his Baul lineage. He has a Masters Degree in Indian Music from Calcutta University.

Krishnendu KD aka Babu preserved all of his Baul tradition decades ago and it is safely archived, this has already been done yet there are still new Bauls who are tricking people to donate money to
preserve Baul. These 'nakal' fake Bauls are not to be trusted, they are cheating people, they are not from Baul they are not even from Birbhum.

Babu's extensive record collection were personally signed by many of the Greatest Rock Musicians on the planet.

In 1984 Al Aronowitz took Babu Kishan to Tower Records where Babu had chosen Albums by Micheal Jackson, Bob Dylan, Elvis, Ray Charles, Disco Hits, Quincy Jones, just as he was going to pay for them Quincy Jones appeared and Al Aronowitz introduced Babu to Quincy Jones. Al was going on and on telling Quincy about Babu Kishan and his music career in India. Quincy thanked, Babu for coming to Tower Records and said, all the records were a gift from Quincy. Very thankful and please at meeting Quincy Jones to Babu's delight all the albums were free. Babu said, "Quincy was such a down to earth person and great soul."

The Recording of "We are the World" Babu Kishan was there in the background watching the recording.

The second time Babu Kishan met Quincy Jones again was with Al Aronowitz at the Recording of "We are the World" in New York 1985, it was a honour to be there and watch the whole production. I was lucky to sit and watch Quincy Jones at work with all the Greats of America. They were all so busy but I was there! Babu said, I am so lucky and I went on to release these 'Greats of American music' in India when I worked for CBS India (now Sony Music) From 1986- 1994 I personally met many of them during this time period.

Special thanks always to my Good Friend Al Aronowitz it was through him that I reconnected The Band & Bob Dylan & Albert B Grossman to my father for the first time since 1967 where I arranged a 40 city tour of America with Bob Dylan.

All the contacts after 1967 came through me and my friendship with Al Aronowitz. He was an unlikely friend but such a great friend for decades along with Allen Ginsberg.

Babu Kishan's tribute to 'Classical Music History' World's first Female & finest Sitarist who taught 'secret Sitar techniques' to Pandit Ravi Shankar. The Great Annapurna Devi!

10/13/2018

Picture
The above photo 1980's in LA Babu was a very close friend to Annapurna's son Subho they had many plans unfortunately Subho passed away in 1992.  Ravi Shankar and his brother Uday Shankar were all close family friends spending much time at Babu Kishan's family home in Calcutta which was a  Cultural Hub of Calcutta.

Baba Allaudin Khan was a admirer and friend of Babu Kishan's Grandfather 'Nabani Das Khyapa Baul' the great Mystic Baul Saint of Bengal.

Ali Akbar Khan (Annapurna's younger brother) was also, close from Calcutta and a family friend.
Annapurna Devi was a Milestone Masterpiece and a Great Pandit, she had so much power (Shakti), as told by Babu Kishan who knew her personally for decades. You could not look directly onto her eyes. She was the Daughter of the Great Historical Classical Musician Ustad Baba Allaudin Khan and the sister of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, she married Ravi Shankar as his first wife and Ravi Shankar kept her hidden, she never said anything bad about her X or anybody, she was so young when she married she was only 14.

Annapūrṇā Devi; 1927 – 13 October 2018)

Babu has seen her playing the Sitar at 100 miles speed Babu Kishan has been one of the rare people to see her play her Sitar. He also, was lucky to spend much time with her and he says she was the best Sitarist ever and the greatest Sitar and Classical Music teacher ever, he knew personally all the greats she taught. Babu Kishan said, the times when he would visit her in Bombay he would be talking to her and her hands would be air playing the sitar always moving, always in Sitar meditation.

All her life she kept herself hidden but in Babu Kishan's opinion she was the real and only DIAMOND in the history of Hindustani Classical Music. She was married to the Sitar and a wonderful Women.

She proved her talent by creating the biggest flute Pandit and Santoor players in the world, ShivKumar Sharma (Santoor) and Hari Prasad Chaurasia (Flute) and many others but these are the 2 biggest according to Babu Kishan.

Babu Kishan would show up at her house, always unannounced  with a packet of Sweets.

The above picture is Annapurna, her Dad Baba Allaudin Khan, Ali Akbar Khan and her mother.
"Born in Maihar town in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh in 1927, Devi was trained by Ustad ‘Baba’ Allauddin Khan, her father. “She remained a recluse for most of her life – much of her time was dedicated to teaching a small though select group of students,” a press release by the Annapurna Devi Foundation said. Among her famous students were Aashish Khan (sarod), Amit Bhattacharya (sarod), Bahadur Khan (sarod), Basant Kabra (sarod), Hariprasad Chaurasia (bansuri), Jotin Bhattacharya (sarod), among others, it added.

"Annapurna Devi became a very accomplished surbahar (bass sitar) player of the Maihar gharana (school) within a few years of starting to take music lessons from her father Alauddin Khan. She started guiding many of her father's disciples, including Nikhil Banerjee and Bahadur Khan, in classical music as well as in the techniques and intricacies of instrumental performances. In 1941, age 14, she married one of her father's talented students, Ravi Shankar. She converted to Hinduism upon marriage.

In the 1950s, Ravi Shankar and Annapurna Devi performed duets in Delhi and Calcutta, principally at the college of her brother, Ali Akbar Khan. But later, Shankar started getting insecure, since she used to be applauded in concerts more than he was, and she thereafter decided not to perform publicly.
Devi and Shankar's son, Shubhendra Shankar (1942–1992), (or "Subho", as he was popularly known) received rigorous training in sitar under her tutelage, until his father chose to interrupt his musical talim or training and took him to the United States. Shubhendra died at an early age in 1992, after a marriage and the birth of three children. Shubhendra did not have a solo career in classical music, but did for a period accompany his illustrious father Ravi Shankar in concerts in the USA and abroad."

Annapurna Devi's father Baba Allaudin Khan was the founder of Maihar Gharana."

In 1988, she married Rooshikumar Pandya, a management consultant, he died in 2013 suddenly of a cardiac arrest at the age of 73, the press release said."

The American Poet Allen Ginsberg & Baul - Babu Kishan The Indian Poet & friends Al Aronowitz & Bob Dylan.

10/5/2018

Picture
Babu's link on Allen Ginsberg's page Misc...
NOTE: This is a huge story, this is a very brief synopsis.

"Many people in Indian have written about Allen Ginsberg & Bob Dylan and none of them have met either, making huge speculations that are impossibly inaccurate. They love to make up stories tying both to Bangladesh and the poet Lalon Fakir with Allen Ginsberg & Bob Dylan, making up stories about how generic Baul is tied to both. No Baul met or associated with Ginsberg and Dylan other than first Babu Kishan's father and his brother and then Babu Kishan. Babu Kishan is the only one who had an ongoing relationship with both but it is curious how other Bauls follow where Babu goes.

However, there is no tie other than late in Ginsberg's life he wrote a poem title Lalon and the poem had nothing to do with Lalon? It is a joke, so here is the real story and who both were great friends with, BABU KISHAN he is the only one from India and the only Baul who is on both web sites. Babu Kishan is the only one who became great friends with Al Aronowitz who was the God Father of Rock Journalism was also, friends with Allen Ginsberg, Bob Dylan, Albert B Grossman it was through Al Aronowitz that Babu Kishan met all of the great Musicians of America.

It was through Ravi Shankar that he met George Harrison, Babu traveled and performed with Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan and many others."

Babu Kishan is in the process of writing his personal story of  his long friend and friendship with Allen Ginsberg. He is the only Baul who developed a long friendship with Allen Ginsberg.

Of course this friendship has it roots in Babu Kishan's Grandfather 'Nabani Das Khyepa Baul'who was an Avadhuta that Ginsberg met on his trip to India in '1962' and whom he kept a personal and private connection all his life. You can see Babu Kishan's link on Allen Ginsbergs Page under links, miscellany. Babu and Allen are both poets and they were mystical friends.

"We also are indebted to the influence of Allen Ginsberg, who met Nabani Das in the early 1960s and wrote “Indian Journals” and never wavered from his spiritual path; to Albert B. Grossman who brought Nabani’s sons Purna and Luxman Das Baul with their group to the US in 1967 to record for Elektra Records and tour; "

Albert Grossman was the Music Producer of Bob Dylan. It was 'Allen Ginsberg' who contacted them to bring Nabani Das Khyapa Baul to America:

"
Albert Bernard Grossman (May 21, 1926 – January 25, 1986) was an American entrepreneur and manager in the American folk music scene and rock and roll. He was famous as the manager of many of the most popular and successful performers of folk and folk-rock music, including Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Peter, Paul and Mary, the Band, Odetta, Gordon Lightfoot and Ian & Sylvia."

It should be noted that it was Allen Ginsberg who wanted to bring Nabani Das Khyepa Baul to America but he refused, thus he sent his two son's, Laxshman Das Baul and Purna Das Baul and their band. You can see them on the cover of Bob Dylan's album 'John Wesley Harding'.

Poetry written by Allen Ginsberg for Babu Kishan

This is the only Baul Poetry Allen Ginsberg wrote.

“Baul of Bengal, I sing for all,  Blue Danube is my Jamuna,
Hudson my Vrindavan,  see me in Calcutta, Toronto and London,  Hear my call Baul of Bengal,  Same man many names,  same player,  many games,  Love is magic to win at life,  Hear my call O Baul of Bengal.”

Written by Allen Ginsberg in 1983,
as a gift to Babu Kishan '

Babukishan composed the music for the original in collaboration with Garth Hudson, Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, (of The Band) Bob Dylan's Band in 1985 for the tour.

This is the one and only piece of Baul poetry Ginsberg wrote.  Babu Kishan sang this on 40 city American tour with Bob Dylan and the Band.

Babu became great friends with The Band and jammed with them all the time.

Al Aronowitz &
Babu Kishan
Author Al Aronowitz, a legendary New York journalist, will sign copies of his book at the club, located at 308 Bowery, beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 27. As the man who introduced Allen Ginsberg to Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan to the Beatles and the Beatles to marijuana, Aronowitz likes to boast:

"The '60s wouldn't have been the same without me."

The book contains first-hand descriptions of meetings between Dylan and the Beatles that no other writer can describe because no other writer was there at the time. Also participating in the music jam will be jazz saxophonist Hayes Greenfield; Chicago blues guitarist Ladell McLin; Jazz Foundation president Wendy Oxenhorn on harmonica; Kevin Twigg on drums and John DeWitt on bass.

Babukishan Das, familiarly known as Babu, is the son of the celebrated Bengali Baul. Purna Das, whom Dylan introduced to American audiences by posing with Purna for the cover of Dylan's "John Wesley Harding" album. Purna's son, Babu, who has a hit recording on India's pop charts, has made a name for himself by writing scores for many of the films streaming out of India's film capital, known for some reason as Bollywood.

Jacob Dylan confirmed his Dad has never ever been to India. That story is FAKE NEWS by Babu Kishan's younger brother, who negatively influenced his father Purna Das Baul who is in his mid 80's to go along with it? :(

Nabani Das Khyapa Baul and Baba Allaudin Khan - The soul of Music - Mysticism

10/4/2018

Picture
A lesson in Indian Classical Music & Mysticism

Most people do not know this by Ali Akbar Khan and his sweet sister Annapurna's father 'Baba Allauddin Khan' (1862 – 6 September 1972) were the greatest admirers of Babu Kishan's Grandfather ' Baba Nabani Das Khyapa Baul'. 1895 - 1969). Allauddin Khan was one of the first Indian Classical multi instrumentalist, he played Sitar, Sarod, Tabla, Harmonium, Flute, Sarangi, Shenai and more. He was a very mystical person and a Music Composer a beloved family friend to Babu Kishan's family.
Nabani Das Khyapa Bauls Ektara (Gopi Yantra) the one stringed instrument that Bauls pla was so powerful that Baba Allauddin Khan' (1862 – 6 September 1972) who was a great admirer Nabani Das Khyapa Baul'. 1890 - 1969).

Nabani Das \Khyapa Bauls style was Ektara, Baya drum around the waist, Nupoor (ankle bells) was created by him, anybody that copies this style today is copying Nabani Das Khyapa Baul.

Allauddin Khan was one of the first Indian Classical multi- instrumentalist, he played Sitar, Sarod, Tabla, Harmonium, Flute, Sarangi, Shenai and more. He was a very mystical person and a Music Composer, a beloved family friend to Babu Kishan's family.

One time Allaudin Khan asked Nabani,"can I take your Ektara because it is magical and when you play you take me to some other world". Nabani said, "I can give you anything but not my Ektara (Gopi Yantra) because that is my first love".
Somehow, somewhere Allauddin touched and played Nabani's Ektara and felt the mystical vibration, he found thousands of stories, lyrics, mystical vibrations and said, Nabani is a complete musician and a mystic sadhaka. He felt Nabani's smile was worth the whole universe and for the world.

A Baul first love is their instrument. Nabani promised to make him another Ektara but he refused because he wanted Nabanis Ektara because it had a vibration that shocked him to the core.
Nabani and Allaudin knew each other and respected each other. That is why Ali Akbar Khan, Ravi Shankar, Annapurna (who is Ravi Shankar's first wife) Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Allla Rakha father of Zakir Hussain all top Classical Musicians of Bengal had a great respect for Nabani Das Khyapa Baul and his family. A many decades relationship with Purna Das Baula and Babu Kishan. They traveled the world many times together.

The Das family home became a Musical Cultural Cinema Political and Guru Hub in Calcutta created by Babu Kishan aka Krishnendu Das because as a little kid in the 1970's he had an interest. This started with Nabani Das Khyapa Baul who many great poets, authors, Music Composers, Singers, Gurus, Tantrics who admired Nabani Das Khyapa Baul and his singing for Nehru during the Freedom Fight of India. Nehru and Nabani were great friends and Nabani would sing all over India before Nehru gave his speeches.

This Political connection continued with Indira Gandhi, Sanjay, and Rajiv Gandhi.

The Das house on Purna Das Baul Road in Calcutta was also, a Cultural Hub due to the work Babu Kishan did in promoting his father.
